Frankenstorm: The NYC subway system is over 100 years old. In that time, it never experienced a more brutal storm than Hurricane Sandy. Several tunnels are flooded with salt water. It will take several days to pump all the water out. As a result, NYC is crippled without a subway system. The overall destruction of Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast could cost in excess of $100 Billion. Oh, and now that there's no places for NYC sewer rats to live after getting flushed out by Sandy, the city might have some serious health issues with a rat infestation.
