Happy Birthday, George Carlin

Today would be George Carlin's birthday. As a curious youngster, I discovered Carlin by accident through his HBO comedy special. After thirty seconds of his routine about football vs. baseball, I was hooked.

I quickly learned that George Carlin was a pioneer in the world of comedy. He made suits squirm by testing the elasticity of his subversive humor and play on words. Carlin sounded like your funny, hippie uncle who told you raunchy jokes and the occasional conspiracy theory. The audience identified with Carlin's take on the weirdness of everyday life. Dennis Miller was a thinking man's comedian, but Miller often came off like an intellectual snob when he rubbed the audience the wrong way with pompous attitude. Carlin, on the other hand, easily deconstructed complicated themes and poked fun at them using layman's terms.

Here's one of Carlin's most famous bits about the seven words you couldn't say on television (back in the day when there were only three networks) like "fuckarino"......

Like George Carlin, I was raised McCatholic. Here's one of my favorite bits about religion...

RIP, George.

  1. I've seen Carlin a few times over the years and was happy to watch one of his last performances before he stopped existing!

  2. I LOVED Carlin. So glad my husband and I caught him in Vegas practicing for his last HBO Special, and he even told the audience he may be checking his notes. He was a class act. Loved him. His physical humor was great too...
